Welcome to room 20!
As a reading interventionist, I have the pleasure of working with students in kindergarten through grade four. The students are referred by their classroom teachers and the reading consultant. Most FIT (Focused Instruction Time) groups are scheduled for a period of six to eight weeks, five days a week, twenty to thirty minutes per day. My schedule also provides me the opportunity to administer reading assessments.
Focused Instruction by Grade Level
Kindergarten-- Recognizing and producing rhymes, hearing syllables, identifying beginning and ending consonant sounds, identifying upper and lower case letter names, and producing consonant and vowel sounds is stressed at this level. Knowledge of the Fountas and Pinnell high frequency sight words is reinforced in the students' daily reading of an LLI (Leveled Literary Intervention) text.
First Grade--Kindergarten skills are reinforced. Students are blending and segmenting CVC, CVCC, CCVC, CVCE, and R-controlled words, and decoding them in context. A greater number of sight words are being learned and students are given opportunities to discuss and retell a story in context.
Second Grade—In addition to first grade knowledge, students must now learn the sounds of vowel teams and rules for using them. LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) text is used to stress Fluency-reading at an appropriate rate, with accuracy, and meaningful phrases and intonation. Oral and written comprehension strategies are addressed.
Third Grade/Fourth Grade—Emphasis is placed on fluency, being able to give an oral summary of the text, and answer comprehension questions that include text, beyond the text, and author's purpose, using the BAS comprehension rubric. Multi-syllable words, syllable types and common affixes are taught and reinforced.
Encourage your child to read every day. A variety of reading experiences are helpful. Listen to your child read to you, partner read (take turns), choral read (read together), silent read, and read aloud to your child. Developing a daily habit of reading will help create a love of reading.
